Why spices?
Zanzibar’s clove plantations helped earn it the name Spice Island in the 19th century. Spices still grow across the centre of the island, where you can visit working farms.
What you'll do
Your guide leads you through the farm, cutting bark, crushing leaves, and opening pods so you can smell and taste cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, vanilla, and lemongrass. The visit ends with a tasting of tropical fruit picked on the spot, and you can buy fresh spices to take home.
Good to know
The farms are a 30 to 45 minute drive from Stone Town, and the visit lasts around three hours. The walk is gentle and shaded, so it suits children and older travellers well. Wear closed shoes, as the ground can be muddy after rain.
